Ingram Lawn & Garden Tip for Preparing Spring Landscape Gardens
Here is a tip we use for almost every landscape garden we work on during our spring preparations. Many of our customers have Ingram Lawn & Garden maintain their landscapes in addition to lawn cutting service. Our spring time preparation procedures for landscape gardens include these tasks:
- Remove dead leaves
- Remove twigs, dead or diseased branches
- Remove leftover weeds from the previous season
- Prune non-flowering shrubs, perennials, roses, non-flowering trees
- Rack out old mulch where needed
- Install a crisp 3″-4″ edge along the garden borders to insure grass does not migrate into the garden and helps retains the mulch
- Add relevant fertilizers (where needed) to get the plants started off right for the upcoming season
- Install quality compost surrounding the plantings within the garden
- Install a new 2″-3″ layer of quality hardwood mulch
The one product (and garden tip) we always use before and after the final mulch is applied is Preen. Preen is a pre-emergent (weed preventer) and includes an active chemical called Teflon, which acts on weed seeds by creating a chemical barrier in the soil that does not allow the weeds through to the soil surface. There is even a organic variety of Preen available (ask us before using though). Preen is often applied as a granular product which we apply evenly, one ounce for every ten square feet. Once applied our customers gardens will have a minimal amount of weeds during the season which we need to remove. We also re-apply Preen in early summer and early fall. Each time we water the product in after the application. By not allowing weeds to grow within your landscape gardens nourishment is not being robbed (by weeds) from your landscape plants. One note, Preen prevents new weeds from growing so we try and remove the existing weeds during our landscape bed preparation.
