Timing Of Pre-Emergent Crabgrass Control
When is the best time to apply pre-emergent weed control which includes crabgrass preventer? Perhaps the best indicator is soil temperature. Soil temperatures need to be at least 50 degrees F. So waiting for soil temperatures above that point may be a little too late and applying below 50 degrees could be a waste. Crabgrass seed begins to germinate when spring soil temperatures are above 50 degrees F. Even timing the pre-emergent application correctly will not guarantee a crabgrass free lawn. The path to a nice thick lush healthy lawn includes many things. Constant care such as weed and fertilization applications, grub control, aeration and overseeing, watering when needed, lime application, thatch control and proper grass cutting are all part of the ingredients but perhaps the best is proper soil conditions and temperature. At Ingram Lawn & Garden we do not preach an “instant perfect lawn.” You should evaluate your lawn’s health on an annual basis and compare year to year. We offer our Five Step Annual Program to properly feed your lawn and control weeds along with a variety of other service applications to further improve your lawns health.
